About GrantorAI

A grant writing assistant that gives researchers their time back for science. Better science, not thoughtless AI.

Matthijs Cluitmans

Why I created this

My name is Matthijs Cluitmans. I'm a researcher at Maastricht University, and I have written many grant proposals. I have been awarded a reasonable number of grants, but the vast majority of my proposals were rejected.

I built GrantorAI because I wanted to spend less time writing grant proposals and more time doing science. It reads the call, sets up the form, and drafts from my own notes, so the hours go to the research itself. And if you would rather write it yourself, you still get the feedback and the mock review panel.

But not with thoughtless AI. Once every applicant uses AI to write, a well-written proposal stops standing out: any edge a tool like this gives fades the moment everyone has one. What does not fade is better science. So GrantorAI does more than write: it asks. Challenge questions find where your plan leaves a choice open; a mock review panel raises the objections a committee would, while there is still time to think them through. The thinking stays yours; the tool makes you do more of it.

The goal isn't more proposals: it's fewer, stronger ones, and a more level playing field for researchers who don't have the institutional support or native-language advantage to compete on equal terms.

How it works

The call

Upload the call and its form. GrantorAI works out what the funder asks for, section by section, and every draft is written against it.

Your ideas

Write your plan in your own words: rough notes, bullet points, a stream of thought. Every draft is written from it. Challenge questions find where your ideas leave a choice open, or miss what the call asks, before anything is drafted.

The draft

Each section drafted from your ideas, in the form's own structure and the call's terms; or write it yourself. Either way, get editorial feedback on any section: how well it is written and whether it answers the call.

The mock review panel

Three virtual reviewers and a chair challenge the science and the plan, the way a funding committee would, while there is still time to fix it.

After the decision

Answer the reviewers with a rebuttal, point by point. Record the outcome: the lessons in the reviews are kept, and come back as questions on your next proposal.

Collaboration & editing

Share for comments

Send a read-only link to anyone (colleagues, mentors, or program managers). They read your proposal and comment on each section, without an account.

Co-authors edit as suggestions

Invite co-authors, without an account, to edit as tracked changes. You accept or reject each one, as in a word processor.

Export

Export your proposal as a formatted document whenever you need to work offline or submit to the funder's portal.

What types of grants does it work with?

It works with any funder: if you can upload the call, GrantorAI can read it.

It works best when the call includes evaluation criteria and a submission form with defined sections. More detail in the grant call documents means better-aligned output.

Languages

The interface is in English, but your ideas can be in any language. Generated content defaults to English; tell the AI to write in another language if you need it.

What the AI uses

GrantorAI works with what you provide: the grant call, the submission form, your ideas and answers, and the reviewers' comments when you write a rebuttal. It does not use external sources. The AI analyzes your input, extracts requirements, and generates content aligned with the funder's criteria.

Your ownership and privacy

Your data is stored on encrypted servers in the EU. When you use AI features, relevant parts of your proposal are sent to one of our AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or Mistral). They do not use your data for model training and make no intellectual property claims on your content. You retain full ownership of everything you write and everything the AI generates. Full privacy policy and terms.

How the feedback works

Your draft is read against what the funder asks for, in two ways:

  • Editorial feedback on each section: how well it is written and whether it answers what the call asks, with a score and what to improve.
  • The mock review panel: the whole proposal read the way a funding committee would, with its verdict, the strengths, the decisive concerns and what to change.

Scores are AI estimates, not predictions of panel outcomes. Use them as a guide for where to focus your revision time.

What GrantorAI doesn't do

GrantorAI does not guarantee funding, and it cannot fill in sections you haven't provided input for. It drafts, and it asks. It won't invent the ideas; the science has to come from you.
